Ethically Sound Addictions Interventions for Addressing the Unique Needs of Individuals who Identify as LGBTQ+/Gender Non-Binary
Featuring: Del Quest, PhD, LCSW
When: 8:30am-12:00pm (registration starts at 8:00)
Purpose
Members of the LGBTQ+ community face unique challenges which contribute to rates of addiction that are higher than among the general population. Experiences of stigma and discrimination, hate crimes, emotional abuse, and family rejection are common. Substance use can become a way to self-medicate and numb uncomfortable feelings. The purpose of this training is to improve treatment provider’s awareness of these challenges and offer specific strategies that are culturally appropriate and supportive.
Del Quest, PhD, LCSW
Del Quest, PhD teaches social work for Pacific University in Eugene, OR. They provided treatment services to youth experiencing co-occurring disorders and has worked extensively with individuals and families on substance use related issues. At Pacific, they teach courses in social work practice with individual, families, and groups, addictions, suicide prevention, and advanced therapeutic approaches. They love to fly kites at any open space along the Oregon coast and were rescued by a canine who makes them laugh every day.
Creative Adjustments and Attunements: Providing support for clients who are regulating traumatic experiences through substance use
Featuring: Daren Ford, LCSW
When: 1:00pm – 4:30pm (registration starts at 12:30pm)
Purpose
Working with clients or clients with family members who are struggling with substance use disorder can be challenging due to shame, guilt, stigma, and physical dependency. But the more underlying issue that can continue to create obstacles are trauma. This training provides some understanding of the effective interventions that are available for clients who continue to use substance use to attune and adjust to their environment.
