Part 2B: Advanced Teaching Skills for Addressing Combat-Related Issues

What:
This three-day intensive practicum course is Part 2B of the certification course which prepares certified yoga teachers to work in military communities with active duty service members, veterans, family members, professional caregivers, and civilian staff. This is a prerequisite for Part 3 - Mentoring of the yoga teacher certification track for Warriors At Ease. 

Who:
This course is designed for certified yoga teachers (200 hour and above) who wish to work within military communities.

Dates: Jun 20, 21, 22, 2014
Time: 9:00 am - 5:00 pm everyday

You will learn:

1. Deepen your understanding of the U.S. military and culture and learn how to address PTSD, TBI, amputations, spinal cord injuries and combat-related stress by using sensory integration, yoga and meditation to improve psychological health and help alleviate the symptoms of PTSD and improve resiliency and self-regulation.

2. Learn trauma-sensitive teaching guidelines and precautions, as well as yoga asana sequence protocols and modifications for these military populations:

• able-bodied servicemembers with and without PTSD
• older veterans with chronic physical illness and PTSD
• veterans and service members with MST (military sexual trauma)
• veterans and service members suffering from major physical illness, TBI, spinal cord injuries and amputations
• veterans and service members in wheelchairs

3. Learn the neurophysiology of PTSD and how sensory processing can be affected by war-related trauma.

4. Learn how to incorporate pertinent sensory integration treatment principles and techniques into a yoga class for military personnel or combat veterans to maximize healing.

5. Learn pranayama (breathing) techniques that are most effective in reducing hyperarousal.

At the end of this training, you will be able to teach an appropriate, therapeutic yoga class to any segment of the military community.
