Peter Boyer’s exuberant Silver Fanfare with its regal pronouncement, sets a glittery tone for this very special opening night as Steven Karidoyanes begins his 25th year as conductor of the Phil! Add some blue, or rather blues, with William Grant Still’s jazzy, popular Symphony No. 1, the first symphony composed by an African American to be performed by a major orchestra. Hues of emotions reflect across its four movements: longing for love, sorrowing in life, celebrating freedom, and glorifying righteousness. Our blue(sy) palette overflows with Leonard Bernstein’s boisterous Overture to the Broadway musical, Wonderful Town and George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F. Pianist Michael Chertock joins the Phil for this lively piece that Gershwin describes as having the Charleston rhythm, American blues, and energetic ragtime!

Some truly special gifts! Conductor Steven Karidoyanes wrote his symphonic dance, YerakÍna: Dionysian Dance for Orchestra for the Pittsburgh Symphony’s 2006 European Tour. This encore premiered in Patras, Greece, and inspired audience enthusiasm with its homage to one of the best known folk songs and dances in modern Greek culture! From the first note of Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E minor, soloist SooBeen Lee bursts into a melodic maelstrom, beckoning the orchestra to join, casting a grand, playfully hypnotic contrast. Instantly popular from its first premiere in Vienna, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7 is a work of ground-breaking art. This achingly beautiful symphony has sparked endless speculation as to its inspiration—truly a gift that keeps on giving!

Magnificence in Spring
Saturday, March 30, 2019, 7:30PM Memorial Hall, Plymouth, MA
D’un matin de printemps (Of a Spring Morning), a tone poem by the forever young composer Lili Boulanger captures the awakening with its delicate musical brushstrokes morphing to brilliant climax. Our vernal promenade continues as the South Shore Conservatory Youth Orchestra sits side-by-side with the Phil for Georges Bizet’s L’Arlesienne, Suite No. 1, or The Girl from Arles, music depicting a sad tale of youthful promise, love and loss. The magnificence of composer Gustav Mahler abounds with Symphony No. 1, Titan, a bold, blooming piece calling for our largest orchestra of the season! Unconventional in many ways, Mahler’s over-the-top piece radiates irony, humanity and imagination. This symphony is inspiring, poetic, and at times cosmic!
