The class will teach the technical staff how to select the best control chart for any given problem and how most effectively deploy it.

Instructor Bio

  • John J. Flaig, Ph.D. is a Fellow of the American Society for Quality (ASQ) and is managing director of Applied Technology, a consulting, training, and publishing company (www.e-at-usa.com). He is Chair of the ASQ’s Statistics and Reliability group and was previously Program Chair for ASQ Silicon Valley's Annual Quality Conference, the Scholarship and Awards program, and the Education program. His industry experience spans more than forty years where he was employed in everything from small startup operations to some of the largest companies in the world such as Apple, Applied Materials, and Hewlett-Packard. He is Advisor to and Adjunct Professor for the International Technological University. In addition he is Analytics Advisor to 1factory, and as VP of Analytics and Professional Services for ActiveMiner, two small startup companies.
  • Dr. Flaig has published over twenty peer reviewed research papers in areas such as process capability analysis, adaptive control charts, factor effects analysis, optimal resource allocation, and supplier management. He was formerly a member of the Editorial Board of Quality Engineering a journal of the ASQ, and Associate Editor of Quality Technology and Quantitative Management a journal of the International Chinese Association of Quantitative Management.
  • John has given lectures and seminars in Europe, Asia and throughout the United States. His special interests are in statistical process control, process capability analysis, supplier management, design of experiments, and process optimization. He holds a doctorate in engineering and technology management from California Southern University, a master's degree in mathematics from the University of California, and a bachelor's degree majoring in mathematics and economics from California State Polytechnic University. Dr. Flaig received the 2012 Distinguished Alumnus Award from Cal Poly's College of Science.

Course Details

Prerequisites: Basic algebra concepts.  
**Calculus is not necessary but aids in understanding the concepts**
Hardware: If possible, a computer for each student   
Software: If possible, MS Office and Control Charts program from Applied Technology
Required Materials: 

- Proof of online Payment 

- Pencil, Graphpaper & laptop; tablets may not run all software, laptops are preferred

- If you are an ASQ member, a current-dated ASQ Membership ID

- Valid ID(s): sites may require US citizens to provide a Driver's License or a State-Issued ID; if you are not a US citizen you must bring 2 valid forms of identification

- "The Cartoon Guide to Statistics", which is available from Amazon.com

- A calculator capable of statistics - similar to the Sharp EL-5060. 

- Any statistics book with t and F refence tables.

Additional Resources: "Schaum's Outline of Beginning Statistics" by Larry Stephens, for extra practice problems, available for less than $20 on www.amazon.com.
