American Society of Quality Dinner Forum

Speaker Topic: "Practical Implementation of Process Approach for ISO 9001:2015"

ISO 9001:2015 Standards incorporate process approach, which recommends use of PDCA (Plan, Do, Check, Act) cycle for managing processes. Origins of Deming’s PDCA cycle go back to Walter Shewhart, who designed concepts of Statistical Process Control (SPC). Benefits, including consistency, added value, effectiveness, and improvement, of the process approach have been identified in the ISO 9001 standards. There are two aspects of the process approach – process design and interactions of processes. The interaction aspects are addressed through process flow charts, however, the process design, including risk reduction, aspects are not well understood, and a struggle.
While answering questions about challenges in manufacturing, Praveen researched process management, and followed movement of Deming, and and PDCA. Deming has also suggested an alternate approach, called PDSA (Plan, Do, Study, Act). By integrating work of Shewhart, Deming, Juran, Taguchi and Ishikawa, Praveen developed a process management model, called 4P (Prepare, Perform, Perfect and Progress). Results of implementing 4P led to a significant reduction in defective PPM, almost by 70% on the average. Implementation of ISO 9001 systems using the 4P model also led to savings of cost of poor quality by about 2% of Sales. The 4P model has been cited frequently in academic research, and was first used by University of Military Intelligence in 2006.

Mr. Praveen Gupta

Speakers Biography:

Mr. Praveen Gupta received Quality Professional of the Year Award in 2016 for his contribution to field of Quality. He will present a practical approach to implementing process thinking in implementing a Quality Management System, and in process design. The 4P model also inherently incorporates identification of risk factors, and preventive actions while designing a process, and complying with ISO9001 requirements. Praveen pioneered implementation of Six Sigma at Motorola. He taught Operations Management and Innovation at Universities. He has published articles in Quality Progress, Quality Engineering, Quality Digest, Quality, Quality World, Quality Systems Update, and Quality in Manufacturing magazines. He has authored books including Six Sigma Black Belt Handbook, Six Sigma Business Scorecard, and Business Innovation. Recently, he published his two books in Spanish language. Praveen has worked at Motorola Semiconductors and Communication Groups, AT&T Bell Labs’s Switching Systems Division, and Prysm. He has consulted with about 100 small to large corporations, in automotive, software, medical devices, and other industries. Currently, Praveen is the Director of Quality at Stephen Gould in Fremont, CA. He holds a MSEE degree, and is ASQ certified CQE, CSQE and Six Sigma Black Belt. Praveen is Chair of ASQ Section 604, San Francisco. He became a Fellow of ASQ in 1996.
