Structural Racism in 2020

August 6, 2020

Equity Alliance Roundtable

Racial Equity Roundtables are now online!

Of the four dimensions of racism (internalized, interpersonal, institutional, structural), structural racism can be the hardest to understand and articulate. Yet, if we aim to achieve racial justice in our country and communities, we must not only understand structural racism and explain it to others -- we must figure out ways to dismantle it.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the worldwide protests and responses following the murders of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor have provided another stark illustration of structural racism and how it continues to operate -- to the detriment, oppression, and death of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. With the August 2020 Virtual Roundtable, we will dive deeper into the concept of structural racism, using historic and current examples, including many local ones, to improve our understanding and ability to talk about racist sustems, to identify anti-racist actions we can take to change those systems.

The August Roundtable will include participation via the chat feature on Zoom. We will also have a live conversation in race-based affinity groups (participants will be asked which group they would like to participant in when they register).

Roundtables will be conducted online using Zoom, which works with both video and audio. Login instructions will be sent out when you register.  If you are not familiar with Zoom, we encourage you to log on 10 minutes early for a short tutorial.

Facilitated by Aristea Saulsbury and Melissa Meiris. Event registration is sliding scale ($0 - $15). We want the roundtables to be accessible to all who would like to attend, regardless of ability to pay.
