Cultural Humility for Organizations

NorCAN is excited to partner with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (ODEI) at Humboldt State University and the Equity Alliance of the North Coast to offer this special workshop, Cultural Humility for Organizations.

Introduced in 1988 by Drs. Melanie Tervalon and Jann Murray-Garcia, the cultural humility framework is comprised of four principles:

1) critical self-reflection and lifelong learning;
2) recognition and mitigation of inherent power imbalances;
3) mutually beneficial non-paternalistic relationships with community members, highlighting the expertise that resides in the community, outside of the organization, agency, or health center space;
4) institutional accountability and alignment.

Initially designed to support health providers in offering more equitable services to their patients, this framework has been adapted and used in organizations and institutions across sectors.

NorCAN is grateful to work with Dr. Edelmira (Edy) Reynoso, Sasheen Raymond and Meridith Oram from ODEI in facilitating this important workshop on cultural humility for organizations, with a particular emphasis on nonprofits. Portions of the program will be instructional while others will be interactive. There will be opportunities to ask questions, reflect, and discuss in small groups.

* Please note that there is a prerequisite requirement to participate in NorCAN's offering of Cultural Humility for Organizations.
