CPT Short Course

Use and Application of the CPT for Geotechnical Engineering Practice

This 1-day short course will focus on the use and application of the CPT for geotechnical design. Concepts and methods are illustrated with worked examples using commercially available inexpensive software (CPeT-IT and CLiq). The course is designed for geotechnical engineers that want a basic knowledge of CPT and wish to make greater use of the CPT for design.

Dr. Peter Robertson brings more than 40 years experience as an educator, researcher, consultant and practitioner specializing in the areas of in-situ testing and site investigation, earthquake design of geotechnical structures, and soil liquefaction. Peter is recognized as an expert both nationally and internationally in the areas of in-situ testing and soil liquefaction. He is co-author of the primary reference book on Cone Penetration Testing (CPT). He has also authored or co-authored over 250 publications as well a popular CPT Guide that is freely available via the Gregg website.

Schedule:

8:00-10:00 am     Introduction, history, equipment & procedures, standards, soil stratigraphy & soil type

10:00-10:15 am   Break

10:15-noon          Estimating geotechnical parameters

Noon-1:00 pm     Lunch

1:00-2:45 pm      Applications to foundation design, liquefaction and ground improvement

2:45-3:00 pm      Break

3:00-5:00 pm      Worked examples & risk-based site investigation & Questions
