Parent Workshop: Navigating Communication With Birth Parents
Communication with birth parents presents enriching opportunities for the adopted child and his/her family, yet at times there can be unique challenges. This presentation is geared toward families in both fully open and semi-open adoptions (with letters facilitated through Barker.)
Topics to be covered include:
- The latest research on open adoption
- Dealing with changes in frequency of communication
- Maintaining boundaries
- Entering into a relationship with a previously uninvolved birth parent
- Communicating with the birth parents’ extended families
- Learning about new or previously undisclosed difficult information
- Assessing what is in your child’s best interest
- Preparing your child for visits, and/or soliciting their involvement in writing letters
Who should attend: Adoptive parents engaged in open or semi-open adoption arrangements
