Parent Workshop: Navigating Communication With Birth Parents

Communication with birth parents presents enriching opportunities for the adopted child and his/her family, yet at times there can be unique challenges. This presentation is geared toward families in both fully open and semi-open adoptions (with letters facilitated through Barker.)

 Topics to be covered include:

  • The latest research on open adoption
  • Dealing with changes in frequency of communication
  • Maintaining boundaries
  • Entering into a relationship with a previously uninvolved birth parent
  • Communicating with the birth parents’ extended families
  • Learning about new or previously undisclosed difficult information
  • Assessing what is in your child’s best interest
  • Preparing your child for visits, and/or soliciting their involvement in writing letters

Who should attend:  Adoptive parents engaged in open or semi-open adoption arrangements

Facilitators:
Varda Makovsky, LCSW-C, Director of Family and Post-Adoption Services
