Message from OSSEA Board President
Greetings to our Conference Attendees!
On behalf of the OSSEA Board and Committee members, we welcome you to our 2021 Annual Convention. We are genuinely excited to offer 16 hours of quality education from fellow Enrolled Agents, Sherrill Trovato and David Mellem. Both of our speakers will provide attendees with the tools that we are going to need this next year.
During the 2020 Annual Convention, we jumped into the technology-age by offering a live-stream of the presentations. While we are aware that there were issues, we will be continuing this journey for our 2021 Conference. Changes have been made, and we feel confident that our members who are unable to attend in-person will be able to see, hear, and enjoy our speakers.
Our Convention is one of my favorite annual events. What makes a great conference is the people, and our attendees and speakers are top-notch. Whether you are in attendance or watching from your home or office, we hope that you will find Community with other tax professionals, and that the Education offered increases your proficiency. What sets the Enrolled Agent apart from other tax professionals is the continuous quest for more knowledge.
Thank you for being the best part of OSSEA!
Have a great Convention,
Hope E. McGinnis, EA, CPA
President
2021 Convention Letter
26th ANNUAL OSSEA MEETING AND CONVENTION
SHAWNEE LODGE & CONFERENCE CENTER
4404B STATE ROUTE 125
WEST PORTSMOUTH, OH 45663
SEPTEMBER 19-21, 2021
I took a look at the registration letter from last year and thought to myself, well things have changed, but certainly not back to normal yet. We were stepping in unchartered water last year trying to decide what to do about our anticipated upcoming convention. As it turned out, the board made the right decision to hold our education conference in person, but arrange for a zoom option for those who did not feel safe at that time. We had a great attendance, great speakers and those of us that attended had a really good time. It was so good to get out again among our peers and enjoy ourselves.
So, that brings me to the 2021 convention and annual meeting. As you already know from the save the date that was sent earlier, we will be holding our event at Shawnee Lodge outside Portsmouth. It is a really beautiful area, very quiet and peaceful. Your board held their May meeting at the location, and everyone was pleased that we would have a great space for our attendees. People have been hard at work for many weeks to bring our members a good experience, fellowship, superior education and fun to our attendees.
Our education topics were chosen based on the evaluations and education requests from last year. We will welcome a new speaker this year, David Mellem, EA. His wife and speaking partner Mary has been with us before. David will teach on Monday afternoon and all day Tuesday. He will start with a series of short subjects that have been previously requested. Tuesday he will spend the entire day on Federal Tax Updates. Based on our disastrous tax seasons the last couple of years, this should be a very interesting subject.
Our other instructor, Sherrill Trovato, MBA,MST, EA, USTCP has been with us in the past. She is very knowledgeable in the representation field and will bring with her some of those subjects we just don't want to talk about. Before you moan about representation, just keep reading. She will begin on Sunday with Prep To Rep. Sherrill's teaching style is interactive. She will be engaging the audience to work through the subjects as a group. Regardless of whether you feel you do representation or not, this class will help you prepare your returns with some new thoughts in the back of your head. Come prepared to work together in these sessions. She will finish on Monday with an Ethics class and will go through some court cases of interest to Enrolled Agents.
We have included a new topic this year and we are calling it "Practice Management". This topic is highly requested, but because of the nature of the materials, will not be a credited session. A panel of our own members will field questions and discussion about various areas of our offices. We are including members from different practice styles, one person office, larger firms, virtual and in between offices. This is a good opportunity to find out how other Enrolled Agents handle their office and maybe hear some good ideas to try.
The committee has been committed to make the virtual component better this year. Our first year was a learning experience and we have spent countless hours trying to improve for 2021. Most of our virtual attendees had no problems with the broadcast, some did. Shawnee has a brand new tower on property to give them better internet service. We are working with the owners of the tower to make sure all of our electronic needs are met to provide a better virtual experience. Our goal is to give each attendee a trouble free conference.
The registration form is included in this packet. It is preferred you use the link provided for Constant Contact to register. If you have any problems, please call Pam or Kay and they can help if needed. CC has daily update forms making tracking of our registrants so much easier and all money is handled through PayPal and goes straight to the treasurer. You can use your PayPal account or your credit card to register.
Please read closely
All education materials will be delivered electronically to each attendee. This will be handled by email with a link to the education notebook about a week to 10 days ahead of the conference. We will send emails to those that have registered with appropriate captions to keep you up to date on the process. Please read and always follow the links. If you want a paper copy of the materials, just put it on a stick and take anywhere to be printed and hole punched for you. I did this last year and it was very inexpensive. There is always a last minute email with important information to make your experience more productive. I can't stress enough to read those emails around convention time.
The committee is looking forward to seeing you in September, but in the meantime enjoy the rest of your summer. Tax season will be back way sooner than we want.
