 5 Things I Wish I'd Known When
I Started the Fundraising Profession

Barbara Kabakoff, CFRE, joined the Wolf River Conservancy in September 2013 and currently serves as its Chief Development Officer. Barbara is well known in the Memphis philanthropic community for her development expertise, having 40 years' experience working with nonprofits. Her local fundraising service includes positions as the Memphis Zoo's Vice President of Development and Membership during the zoo's first major capital campaign and expansion, then as Director of Development at Christian Brothers University. Prior to joining the Conservancy team in 2013, she served nationally as Director of Planned Giving and Major Gifts for Project HOPE, with headquarters in the Washington, DC/Northern Virginia area.
Paula Jacobson has been President of Methodist Healthcare Foundation since 2000. As president, she oversees fundraising efforts that support the strategic priorities of the healthcare system. While the Foundation raises funds for clinical excellence, the majority of their efforts focus on fulfilling the mission of the system and supporting the needs of the underserved both inside and outside the walls of our hospital.  Major fundraising efforts focus on community and population health initiatives, hospice care, sickle cell and cancer care. Paula was awarded AFP Outstanding Fundraising Executive in 2007, named a Super Woman in Business by the MBJ in 2012, and received the Strong Award from Girls, Inc. in 2015.

Susan Johnson began fundraising as a volunteer for four organizations in Memphis. After taking time off to raise her family, she returned to the nonprofit community in the Development Department at the Church Health Center, and is currently Director of Development at the Dixon Gallery and Gardens, a position she has held since 2003. She manages a staff of five, and oversees all fundraising campaigns, including planned giving and endowment as well as the membership program.

Dan H. Murrell, CFRE, left a 13-year teaching career in 1997 for a career in nonprofit development. He has been Director of Planned Giving at the University of Memphis since 2008. Previously, Dan served as Director of Development for the Community Foundation of Greater Memphis and as Director of Development and Community Relations for Trezevant Manor.
Dan joined AFP in 1996, was President of AFP-Memphis in 2004, and received this chapter's Crystal Award for Outstanding Fundraising Executive in 2008. He is also active in the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning and the Estate Planning Council. He is on the board of the Levitt Shell and is a volunteer driver for ITNMemphis.
