IPP Annouce's New VOEG Training Format!

The Insight Prison Project (IPP) is excited to announce our new Restorative Justice VOEG Facilitator Training. Our multi-phase training model will provide greater support, evaluation and experiential exercises in an effort to better prepare facilitators to implement and run their own groups with incarcerated and formerly incarcerated adults.

INDIVIDUAL TRAINING MODULES

Phase 1: Basic VOEG Facilitation Skills Training (5-Day)                                          $1,100 May 9 – 13, 2011

This is the starting point for all trainees seeking VOEG facilitation training from IPP.  This training will offer in-depth exposure and training in the following concepts and skills:

  • Overview of Restorative Justice and to IPP philosophy, methodology and facilitation model
  • Introduction, explanation and demonstration of IPP facilitation techniques
  • Summary overview of the purpose of the VOEG Curriculum
  • Personal opportunities to complete some VOEG exercises and process them in a group setting as well as to facilitate a simulated VOEG group with a IPP Lead VOEG Facilitator/Trainer
  • Participation at a 1-Day intensive training conducted by VOEG graduates who are prisoners at San Quentin State Prison
  • Professional evaluation by IPP Lead VOEG Facilitator/Trainer

Phase 2: VOEG Intensive Curriculum and Implementation Training (4-Day)                   $900  Sept 14 – 17, 2011

This is 4-day intensive will provide trainees with an in-depth understanding of how to implement the VOEG curriculum at incarceration institutions and re-entry sites.  Topics to be covered are:

  • An in-depth explanation of the VOEG curriculum learning units:  Crime Impact Statement, Self as Victim, Cycle of Offense, Forgiveness, Impact on Victims, Facilitated Dialogue with Victim Panel, Relapse Prevention, Debrief and Goodbye
  • Participation at a VOEG Survivor Intensive in which survivors of severe and violent crime give their Victim Impact Statements and answer trainee questions about how to effectively locate and work with survivors to support healing and personal transformation
  • How to facilitate VOEG assignments in a small-group setting including opportunities for Trainees to facilitate a simulated VOEG group that consists of inmates and/or other attendees as group members who are processing personal accounts of the VOEG Exercises
  • Overview of how to assess the culture of an institution or organization in order to target the appropriate decision-maker to approach regarding program start-up and implementation, and to tailor the VOEG implementation process so that it can be assimilated into daily operations and security protocols while addressing needs of specific populations
  • Overview of how to establish the VOEG Program at New Sites
  • Explanation of professional documentation to be presented to new sites:
  • Professional evaluation by IPP Lead VOEG Facilitator/Trainer

Phase 3:       Advanced VOEG Facilitation Training (3-Day)                                                    $700             October 27 – 29, 2011

This is the final stage of the VOEG training model.  This 3-Day training is for professionals who have already implemented or are in the final stages of implementing a VOEG program, or for those professionals who want to further-develop their VOEG facilitation skill set.  Utilizing a case management approach, the discussion and small-group facilitation exercises will be selected from actual challenges that the attendees have faced while implementing or facilitating VOEG.  Topics to be covered are:

  • Understanding and managing the developmental stages of VOEG including pre-screening interviews, starting a new group, establishing trust, development of the group agreements, managing difficult group members including those with a mental health diagnoses, how to sync survivor and prisoner stories on the day of the dialogues, and extensive advanced small-group facilitation opportunities
  • Implementation of specific VOEG facilitator techniques
  • Professional evaluation by IPP Lead VOEG Facilitator/Trainer

Once people have taken the Phase 1 training, they are eligible to take the Phase 2 or Phase 3 training at any time it is offered in the future.

All phases of training are strongly encouraged but not required.
