SNOOP! Fairmont Creamery and Mitchell's Ice Cream Shop

Fairmont Creamery and Mitchell's Ice Cream Shop:
Built in 1930, the five-story 100,000 square foot Fairmont Creamery building served as a distribution center at the time of the nationalization of the dairy industry. Employing a fleet of 75 delivery trucks, this facility provided daily distribution of Fairmont Creamery Ice Cream in Greater Cleveland and was one of two such facilities in Ohio. Closed in 1983, the building was vacated and fell into disrepair. Although recognized as a Cleveland Landmark, there were many factors perceived as obstacles to rehabilitation. Thankfully, a determined project team persevered to create a new future for the Fairmont Creamery that includes thirty residential units, retail and office space, and a parking garage. Today, the building is completely occupied.

Located in the middle of the Cleveland's increasing vibrant Market Square Historic District is Mitchell's Homemade Ice Cream Ohio City Kitchen and Shop. Mitchell's owners opted to restore and rehab the Rialto movie and vaudeville theater to be the headquarters of their thriving local ice cream company and their largest shop. The building project gave high priority to retaining the original architectural features of the 1919 theater. The theater lobby and ticket booth have become the ice cream counter and dining area, while the theater is now the company-wide kitchen. The playful reuse of the theater serves as an inspiration for the whole neighborhood, and beyond.
