Series Eleven:  Integrating ORCID Persistent Identifiers with DuraSpace DSpace, Fedora and VIVO

Researchers and scholars face the ongoing challenge of distinguishing their research activities from those of others who have similar names. As collaborations across disciplines, institutions, borders and technologies increase, interactions among diverse research information systems are also on the rise. Being able to easily and uniquely attach your identity to research objects such as datasets, equipment, articles, media stories, citations, experiments, patents, and notebooks with an ORCID ID makes it simple to verify authorship in the vast landscape of scholarly research.

ORCID is an open, non-profit, community-driven effort to create and maintain a registry of unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID is a hub that connects researchers and research through the embedding of ORCID identifiers in key workflows. 

 This series provides detailed insights into how ORCID persistent digital identifiers can be integrated with DSpace and Fedora repositories and with the VIVO open source semantic web application that provides an integrated view of the scholarly work of an organization. Representatives from organizations and institutions who have enabled and implemented ORCID with these open source systems will share their experiences and highlight how ORCID adds value to information systems.

New Possibilities: Developments with DSpace and ORCID

DSpace 5 brings native support for ORCID integrations, and existing code libraries can be easily adapted to take advantage of information from ORCID records and to support authenticated connections between author records in DSpace and ORCID iDs.  Hear about the ORCID integration requirements from an institution that manages the national CRIS and Open Access programs and from teams who have enabled and implemented these new integrations, and explore the requirements and next steps to be taken as we continue to enhance DSpace.

Enhancing Early Career Researcher Profiles: VIVO & ORCID Integration

VIVO provides an integrated view of the scholarly work of an organization. A big part of that picture is postdoctoral associates and graduate students who are laying the foundations for their careers and their contributions to research. In order to make that contribution more visible, and to provide them with a portable record of their early career achievements, a framework to help them to create and curate their growing scholarly profile is essential. A VIVO-ORCID integration helps both these systems, and other research management systems linked to them, to better serve the scholarly community.
