DuraSpace Hot Topics Series: All About the SHared Access Research Ecosystem (SHARE)

Series Ten:  All About the SHared Access Research Ecosystem (SHARE)

Curated by Greg Tananbaum, Product Lead, SHARE

SHARE (SHared Access Research Ecosystem) is a higher education and research community initiative to ensure the preservation of, access to, and reuse of research outputs.  SHARE was established in 2013 as a joint initiative of The Association of Research Libraries (ARL),  the Association of American Universities (AAU), and the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU),  generously supported by grants from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS).

This series will provide detailed insights into the motivation behind SHARE, the current state of SHARE’s development, and SHARE’s vision of how higher education can better structure its strategies and systems for managing both data and publications.

This series consists of 3, 1-hour webinars:

 Webinar 1:

SHARE: An Overview

Thursday, November 13, 1:00pm ET

Presented by Greg Tananbaum, Product Lead, SHARE

This webinar will delve into the factors that led to the creation of SHARE, how it relates to the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) directive and other recent developments, and the role the higher education community is uniquely positioned to play in the good stewardship of research.  We’ll provide a broad overview of what SHARE is presently building and its plans to give campus-driven research outputs their widest exposure and ensure that they can be broadly reused.

 Webinar 2:

The SHARE Notification Service

Wednesday, December 10, 1:00pm ET

Presented by Eric Celeste, Technical Lead, SHARE

The second webinar will present the SHARE Notification Service, still in its pre-beta form. The Notification Service culls reports of research release events from a variety of repositories, publishers, and research focused tools and notifies users of new resources. The webinar will include an architectural overview of the service, a demonstration, and information about how to include new resources in the service. We’ll also describe some of the issues we have run into creating the service and how the service may be integrated with future SHARE initiatives or your own systems.

 Webinar 3:

Roadmap to the Future of SHARE

Wednesday, January 14, 11:00amET

Presented by Judy Ruttenberg, Program Director, Association of Research Libraries

The third and final webinar in this series will explore SHARE’s long-term vision of a robust repository ecosystem that includes not just the notification service but also layers to give campus-driven research outputs their widest exposure, and ensure that they can be broadly reused.  It will discuss how SHARE aims to (a) provide an inventory of what is available within publicly accessible repositories; (b) facilitate discovery of, and access to, content across these repositories; and (c) expose this content so that the community can reuse, mine, and build services on top of the corpus.  Join us as we discuss how these layers fit together, and the challenges and opportunities SHARE faces in implementing this vision.
