Codes/Certifications & Technology Lecture Series

Join us for a free seminar to learn the latest developments regarding hazardous area electrical codes, standards, and technology in the offshore market, specifically for the Gulf of Mexico in 2016!

Whether you are an engineering contractor designing a new FPSO, an EPC firm designing a new semi-submersible, or an Operator refurbishing an offshore production platform, 2016 will mark significant changes to the offshore hazardous locations market regarding technological advances and related trends.

R. STAHL, Inc., a recognized leader in explosion protection equipment and system solutions, will be hosting a panel of leaders on the various subject matter of these new changes, including:

  • Brad Zimmerman - Chairman, UL STP 60079 Committee
  • Craig Yoss - Vice President Business Development, R. STAHL Inc.
  • Luke Briant - Marine Technology Manager, SIEMENS
  • Reiner Otterbach - Senior Product Manager, R. STAHL, Inc.

This team of experts will outline the present, and future, direction of the code standards and area certifications, and will also clarify the rationale supporting it. The event will be held at the club level of the Reliant Stadium during Houston's Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). See below for the agenda:

  • 9:30am-10:30am: Global codes and standards as it relates to explosive areas are harmonizing at an unprecedented rate.  The National Electrical Code, the Canadian Electrical Code, ATEX, and IECEx have come closer and closer together.  In the USA and the Gulf of Mexico, harmonization is evident in Article 505, which utilizes UL60079 standards.  Learn the latest developments to this very important article, and where it is going directly from the chairman of the UL STP 60079 committee.
  • 11:00am-12:00pm: The adoption of IECEx within the USCG has created opportunities in the Gulf of Mexico.  If you build equipment that supports the global offshore market, you will not want to miss this presentation.  When it comes to IECEx, if you are not careful, small errors or misunderstandings can create big delays and costly issues.  This session focuses on the top 10 considerations to make when designing an IECEx certified system.
  • 1:30pm-2:30pm: This presentation will describe the evolution of power, propulsion, and automation solution packages on today's modern day offshore vessels, drill ships, and offshore installations.  As the demand for deep water installations has softened, the need for complex offshore assets to operate with lower costs, while improving efficiencies has become vital.  As a result, the revolution of solution packages to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable systems on board these highly expensive assets has become essential.  Key aspects of technical solutions, project engineering, project management, and life cycle support will be discussed..
  • 3:00pm-4:00pm: Remote I/O is not a new technology but seems to get a second spring under different names today.  Call it smart I/O, virtual marshaling, or intelligent I/O - the remote I/O has survived over many years in parallel to other technologies like fieldbus or wireless.  The main focus at these times was the significant CAPEX savings by reducing the amount of cables on platforms, resulting in less cable costs and weight..  This presentation will discuss the next generation of smart I/O, and it's benefits to both CAPEX and OPEX.  Real life examples will be presented with hard calculations of savings.
