IECEx Certification and Technology Trends in the Gulf of Mexico

Join us for a free seminar to learn the latest developments regarding hazardous area electrical codes, standards, and technology in the offshore market, specifically for the Gulf of Mexico in 2014!

Whether you are an engineering contractor designing a new FPSO, an EPC firm designing a new semi-submersible, or an Operator refurbishing an offshore production platform, 2014 will mark significant changes to the offshore hazardous locations market regarding technological advances and related trends.

R. STAHL, Inc., a recognized leader in explosion protection equipment and system solutions, will be hosting a panel of leaders on the various subject matter of these new changes, including:

  • Dr. Thorsten Arnhold - Chairman, IECEx
  • James Rocco - Commander, U.S. Coast Guard
  • Mark Coppler - Chair, IEC Technical Committee (TC31)
  • Frank Scopa - Director of Global Projects, R. STAHL, Inc.

This team of experts will outline the present, and future, direction of the code standards and area certifications, and will also clarify the rationale supporting it. The event will be held at the club level of the Reliant Stadium during Houston's Offshore Technology Conference (OTC). See below for the agenda:

  • 9:30am-10:30am: The IECEx International Certification System is becoming more globally prevalent. With the introduction of IECEx acceptance in the Gulf of Mexico, these trends will continue. Dr. Thorsten Arnhold will present the application of the IECEx Certification System in offshore applications. He will discuss the unique advantages and safety aspects that the IECEx system brings to the Gulf of Mexico.
  • 11:00am-12:00pm: Since it's first proposal in 2009, the U.S. Coast Guard has now started accepting the IECEx International Certification System for vessels in the Gulf of Mexico. This technical presentation will focus on the acceptance of IECEx certified hazardous location equipment for offshore applications in the USA. This session will be an excellent opportunity to learn the U.S. Coast Guard's approach in the Gulf of Mexico and how to conform to the international hazardous area safety standards like IECEx.
  • 1:30pm-2:30pm: This presentation will focus on IEC products, standards, and direction for offshore applications. There will be technical discussion on the structure and development of the standards pertaining to offshore safety, design, and maintenance. The IECEx International Certification System is based on IEC 60079, so this session will provide the offshore industry a unique perspective on the direction of hazardous area standards and certifications for IECEx and how they came to be in place.
  • 3:00pm-4:00pm: Fitting electrical systems in a classified control room within a platform, rig, or FPSO has always been a challenge. As even larger installations move further out from the continental shelf, operating in deeper waters, these issues become magnified. With the acceptance of IECEx certified products in the Gulf of Mexico, and further acceptance of Article 505 of the National Electric Code, designers, installers, and electricians now have access to new technologies and techniques as it relates to explosion protected products. This session will discuss new options, allowing the relocation of already overburdened assets from a control room closer to the process area.
