We are honored to kick off the 2019 Santé Center for Healing CEU Series with Dr. Khawaja and Tina Johnston, NCC, LPC, EVGP, GCDF, MCC, held on campus at Santé Center for Healing. Recognizing Sleep Disorders: A Primer for Mental Health Providers
 
Objectives:
  •  State 3 common sleep related chief complaints
  • Obtain basic clinical history which will enable you to screen for sleep disorders
  • State initial treatments for common sleep disorders
 
Effects of Alcohol and Drugs on Sleep
 
Objectives: 
  • Describe the effects of alcohol on sleep architecture
  • Name 2 sleep disorders which get worse with alcohol
  • Describe the effects of cannabis and stimulants on the sleep architecture.

 

Dr. Khawaja is a board-certified psychiatrist and a sleep medicine physician. He completed his medical school from King Edward Medical College, Lahore, Pakistan.
After finishing medical school, he came to the US and completed his residency in Psychiatry at New York Medical College, Valhalla, where he served as chief resident in his 4th year. Dr. Khawaja was recipient of the “The award for Academic Excellence” during his residency and scored 97 percentile in the in service exam.
He moved to Minnesota where he worked at the VA Medical Center as the director of the Partial Hospitalization program. He got interested in the field of sleep medicine and went on to complete a fellowship in sleep medicine at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN
He was awarded “Bush Medical Fellowship” from the Bush Foundation in MN. He went back to the VA Minneapolis and expanded their sleep program. In 2013, he was appointed as the medical director for Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center at Hennepin County Medical Center, which is one of the oldest academic sleep programs in the country. He worked there with Dr. Carlos Schenck, who has discovered several sleep disorders including REM Behavior Disorder.
Dr. Khawaja has close to 100 publications including peer-reviewed papers, review papers, book chapters, and editorials. He has been a Co-Director of a full day course, “Sleep Medicine for Psychiatrists: A Review” at the American Psychiatric Association annual meeting for 5 years.
He runs the Sleep Center at the VA Medical Center and is the CEO of MD TruCare, PA, which is a practice providing psychiatry, endocrinology, and sleep medicine services in Grapevine, TX.
He has just completed a book “Sleep and Co-Morbid Psychiatric Disorders: A Case Book” by Springer, which will be published early next year.

What does it feel like when you are at the top of your game and you KNOW you are doing great work? Not only does it feel GREAT, but everyone around you benefits too, including your patients/clients! We will explore how to Find Your Groove and identify possible obstacles that might get in your way of doing the quality of work you desire. It will be interactive, so dress comfortably. Or just kick your shoes off. Get ready to GROOVE!

Objectives:
  • Give participants new perspective on doing great work
  • Interact with other providers to build relationships
  • Make participants feel encouraged and empowered

 

Tina Johnston, NCC, LPC, EVGP, GCDF, MCC is a visionary entrepreneur and innovator who works with business leaders and others who desire a high level of success in both their personal and professional lives.
She has developed numerous programs for a wide variety of interests and populations, all with an emphasis on personal success.
Her experience is broad and diverse and includes mental health, positive psychology, substance abuse, education systems, wellness techniques, and business development.
She is the founder of NewStarts and the Keller Counselors Association, and the co-founder of WAFM, the Wellness Association of Flower Mound.
WAFM was founded specifically to provide a local forum for health and wellness professionals the opportunity to connect, collaborate, and learn from each other. This allows them to increase their knowledge, understanding, and skills in healthcare, while also becoming better known in their community.
Her education includes a Master’s degree of Education in Counseling from the University of North Texas, and a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Texas at Arlington. She is licensed as an LPC with several other specialized certifications and has trained with many expert practitioners from a variety of disciplines.
She currently serves as a Chaplain and Counselor Coordinator for the Medical Reserve Corps of Denton County.
Tina’s focus on maximizing personal potential has allowed numerous local and national business leaders and entrepreneurs to greatly increase their opportunities and success - for themselves, their employees, and their families.
