The Neuroscience of Normalization
Before birth, a baby’s brain grows to only about 20% of its ultimate size. Can we influence the 80% of neurodevelopment still to come? What if we make a mistake? Join us as we explore the development of the brain from birth through adolescence and discuss the intersection of what science knows with what Montessori theorized. Special attention will be given to sensory development/refinement, the child’s inner guide, the balance of freedom and discipline, and the role of the adult.
Saturday Afternoon Session, 2:00 - 4:30 at the Christian Church of Clarendon Hills
Variability vs. Disability: Respecting the Spectrum of Neurodevelopment
Just how can Montessorians and parents shepherd children with a feisty inner guide? Join us as we actively engage with the questions of how we can support typical and atypical neurodevelopment from infancy through adolescence. Special attention will be given to ADHD, dyslexia, sensory integration, the spectrum of freedom and discipline, and the role of rewards and punishment.
Sunday Morning Session, 9:30 am - 12:30 pm at Seton Montessori School
Working with Adults: A Session for Montessori Leaders
Montessorians must navigate a web of relationships among students, teachers, administrators, and families. Yet, very little guidance is available regarding how best to work with adults. How should we approach the fifth plane of development? What strategies are effective for aiding the adult’s intellectual growth? How can we create wholesome partnerships with families and staff? Do we need a prepared adult environment? This workshop will both review key neurodevelopmental factors that influence adult learning and present strengths-based, real-life possibilities for skillfully working with adults. Join us as we consider adult learning through a Montessori lens.
