Nature's Scientists in Salida 

Join us for Nature's Scientists, a summer in nature with hands-on activities, games, art, journaling, and of course, exploring!  We will meet at Longfellow Elementary School each week and take the Chaffee Shuttle bus to our field trip locations. 

Ages: Rising 4th - Rising 6th Graders

Meeting Location: Longfellow Elementary School (*same time and drop off location as  Guidestone Garden camp for grades K - 3)

Time:  9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

6 Session Series on Tuesdays:

June 12 – Session 1: Wilderness Skills @ Riverside Park and Salida Mountain Trails on S MountainGet to know fellow campers and counselors through activities at Riverside Park and a hike.  Team building games, geology, Leave No Trace and Shelter Building will all be a part of this first week of camp!

June 19 – Session 2: Our Wetlands @ Mount Ouray State Wildlife Area.  In this session, we will explore a what makes a wetland habitat so unique for all the animals who rely on it.  We will learn about migratory birds, aquatic plants and invertebrates who call the area home.  We will also have time for fishing at the pond!

June 26 – Session 3: River Creatures @ Poncha Creek Picnic AreaExplore the creek looking for aquatic invertebrates and learning about their life cycles!  During this session, we will dive into what makes our waters a good home for fish and insects.

(no camp week of July 4th)

July 10 –  Session 4:  Life in the Subalpine @ Mount Shavano Campground.   Learn about the mammals who make their home in the Subalpine by exploring skins, skulls, scat and tracks.  During this session we will practice navigation skills with a compass scavenger hunt.

July 17 –  Session 5:  Browns Canyon National Monument and Ruby Mountain Campground.  Explore the trails of Browns Canyon and learn about erosion, rocks, and the Arkansas Watershed through building models!

July 24 – Session 6:  Wildflowers and Forestry @ Monarch Mountain.  Hike to an alpine pond exploring wildflowers, learning about Boreal Toads, and looking at forest ecology including beetles and wildfires.

**Note – sessions are not likely to change locations, but it is a possibility due to weather and unforeseen circumstances. However, meeting locations will stay the same. 

Cost: $240 for all 6 sessions or $40 per session
