Nature's Explorers in Salida 

Join us for Nature's Explorers, a summer in nature with hands-on activities, games, art, journaling, and of course, exploring!  We will meet at Salida Middle School each week and take a Chaffee Shuttle bus to our field trip locations. 

Ages: Rising Kindergartners - Rising 3rd Graders

Meeting Location: Salida Middle School (**same time and drop of location as Guidestone Garden Camp for grades 4 - 6)

Time:  9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

6 Session Series on Thursdays:

June 14 –  Wilderness Skills @ the South Arkansas. Get to know fellow campers and counselors while exploring the South Arkansas Ecological Learning Center (behind Southwest Conservation Corp)  Team building games, Leave No Trace, and Shelter Building and Art will all be a part of this first week of camp!

June 21 Session 2: Our Wetlands @ Mount Ouray State Wildlife Area.  In this session, we will explore a what makes a wetland habitat so unique for all the animals who rely on it.  We will learn about migratory birds, aquatic plants, and invertebrates who call the area home.

June 28- Session 3: River Creatures @ Poncha Creek Picnic Area Explore the creek looking for aquatic invertebrates and learning about their life cycles!  During this session, we will dive into what makes our waters a good home for fish and insects.

(no camp the week of July 4th)

July 12- The Life of Fish @ The Mount Shavano Fish Hatchery and Sands LakeLearn more about trout while visiting the local Fish Hatchery and then learn to cast and fish at Sands Lake.

July 19 – Grasslands and Pollinators @ Children’s Discovery Ranch – Discover various creatures including grasshoppers, Monarch butterflies, and birds who all make the grasses of the Ranch their home!  Find out the importance of these animals and as a suprise, we will also learn about predatory hawks and owls who abide in the trees near by looking over the open fields.

July 26 – Wildflowers and Subalpine Mammals @ Monarch Mountain Learn about the mammals who make their home in the Subalpine by exploring skins, skulls, scat and tracks.  We will also explore this beautiful area for wildflowers and learn about spruce beetles.
