Memphis Holocaust Education Conference to Feature Ethnomusicologist Dr. Tamara Freeman
"Music of the Holocaust"

The Tennessee Holocaust Commission (THC) is proud to announce the 2014 Holocaust Education Conference, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday, October 30, 2014 from 8:00 am—3:30 pm at the Shelby County Schools Teaching & Learning Academy located at 2485 Union Avenue, Memphis, TN 38112. This year’s program will feature Dr. Tamara Freeman.

Dr. Freeman performs Holocaust music lecture-recitals on her 1935 Joseph Bausch viola, which is a relic of the Shoah. Her Holocaust presentation venues have included the Chautauqua, NY Summer Institution, Café Europa Survivors’ reunions, and the NJ State House Assembly Chambers for the 2006 Kristallnacht Commemoration with Governor John Corzine. Dr. Freeman specializes in communicating lessons of morality and courage through her Holocaust music classes and performances.

This one-day conference is specifically designed for middle and high school teachers to provide them with additional knowledge and resources about the Holocaust. Educators are encouraged to identify mature students to accompany them to the all day workshop for hands-on activities and interaction with survivors and educators in the field of Holocaust studies.

Each year this program is open to all middle and high school teachers, preferably with some experience in teaching the Holocaust.  There is no cost to attend the conference.  Registration is required and space is limited. Parking for this year’s conference is free and available at the Teaching and Learning Academy. Lunch will be served as part of the conference for a fee of $8.00 per person. Lunch includes pulled Chicken Barbeque with sides and a beverage. Of course if you wish to dine on your own or bring your own lunch you are welcome to do so; however we will not be able to accept payment for lunch on the day of the conference. Please send lunch payment made out to the Tennessee Holocaust Commission by Wednesday, October 1, 2014.
