Fall 2017 Master Recycler
Application Form

Last day to register Monday, Sept. 11, 2017

Porter County residents and those who work here can learn more about waste prevention, recycling and composting, and meet others who have similar interests in this comprehensive six-week session. This form is your official application into the program. You will be notified upon your acceptance.

  • Sept. 12 – Introduction, waste prevention: Therese Davis, Executive Director; Donna Stuckert, Public Education Coordinator
  • Sept. 19 – Waste Flow Process: Megan McElligott-Laxton, Homewood Disposal; James Metros, Republic
  • Sept. 26 -- Waste Flow Process: Neil Samahon, Metro Recycling; Steve Dolak, Operator,  large scale composting
  • Oct. 3 -- Household hazardous waste: Mark Cregger, Tradebe; water resource management, Reggie Korthals, BF&S
  • Oct. 10 – Organic waste reduction, vermicomposting and backyard composting: Master Recyclers Barb and Rudy Kunshek
  • Oct. 17 – Graduation, invite your family!

Participants who miss more than one class date above will not complete the course and will not graduate. Class participants must complete 30 Payback (volunteer) Hours to achieve Master Recycler certification.

Participants will receive a rain barrel and backyard compost bin. 

Since this is an evening class, the following daytime tours are not mandatory, but highly recommended:

  • Sept. 21 – TOUR: MRF-Star Disposal Homewood, 11 a.m.
  • Sept. 28 – TOUR: Valparaiso compost site/Metro Recycling, 1 p.m.
  • Oct. 5 – TOUR: Pratt Industries, 10 a.m.
  • Oct. 12 – TOUR: Newton County Landfill, Noon in Crown Point
Funding for the rain barrel was provided in part by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, Lake Michigan Coastal Program.
