About Dr. O'Sullivan:


Patricia S. O’Sullivan is Director, Research and Development in Medical Education in the Center for Faculty Educators at the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. At UCSF she directs the Teaching Scholars Program and oversees the doctoral program in health professions education as well as leads efforts in faculty development and education research. She has over 35 years of experience in medical and health professions education.  Much of her research has focused on clinical education both at the undergraduate and graduate level.  Her studies on the use of portfolios for assessment, initially funded by the Stemmler Fund of the National Board of Medical Examiners, have expanded to include assessing reflective ability. More recently, her work has focused on research in faculty development. Dr. O’Sullivan has been chair of the Research in Medical Education (now named MESER) Section of the Association of American Medical Colleges, of the RIME program Planning committee and of the Division for Professions Education of the American Educational Research Association. Dr. O’Sullivan has undertaken educational research studies with health professionals in medicine, nursing, pharmacy, and health related professions.  Her work has been recognized as a Fellow of the American Educational Research Association and as the 2011 recipient of the Merrill Flair Award of the Association of American Medical Colleges Group on Educational Affairs. She currently holds the Endowed Chair of Surgical Education.
