Becoming an Anti-Racist Church: Journeying Toward Wholeness
Martin Luther King’s observation that 11 am on Sunday is the most segregated hour of the week remains all too true. Christians addressing racism in American society must begin with a frank assessment of how race figures into the churches themselves. In this class, we will lift up the ways in which the church’s prophetic work has proved a catalyst for progress in American race relations, and we’ll explore how our community of faith can grow in its commitment to racial reconciliation. Led by Rev. John Elford, Senior Pastor, and Rev. Heather Lee, Justice Associate.
The Spirituality of Thomas Merton
Thomas Merton (1915-1968) was an American monk, author, activist and mystic. He is best remembered as a master of everyday spirituality, discovering meaning in everything he experienced. His life combined contemplation, social action and a deep commitment to interfaith dialog. This class will feature guest speakers including Fr. Bruce Nieli, CSP, and an optional weekend retreat (Oct. 9-11, $150 including meals and lodging) at Lebh Shomea House of Prayer in South Texas to experience the spiritual practices of solitude and silence. Led by Diana Dworin, Adult Ministries Coordinator.
On Your Mark, Get Set, Go! The Gospel According to Mark
Join a small group study of The Gospel of Mark. The only text will be your Bible -- and the only class preparation will be reading Mark, the shortest and earliest of the four gospels. You will find yourself immediately encountering the gospel in a safe, facilitated environment. Our focus will be on the words before us and how they speak to us today. Led by Walter Hames, UUMC member.
Vespers & Verses
Come for evening candlelight prayers and reflection in the historic Harris Chapel after our classes wrap up at 8 pm. We'll use Phyllis Tickle's "The Divine Hours" as an inspiration for our short time (15 minutes) together, which will include psalms and poetry readings. All are welcome, whether or not you are enrolled in Tuesday Night Lights.
