This informative workshop will cover common mental health conditions that occur in youth with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The prevalence, clinical characteristics, and general treatment recommendations for each condition will be discussed. Case examples will be provided.

Workshop Objectives
At the end of this activity the learner will be able to
• List the DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD)
• Discuss the prevalence and impact of psychopathology in ASD
• Explain the clinical characteristics and treatments for several common psychiatric conditions in youth with ASD

Presenter: Roma A. Vasa, M.D., is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and the Director of Education and Training at the Kennedy Krieger Institute. She is also an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Dr. Vasa's primary research interest relates to the cognitive and neural underpinnings of pediatric anxiety disorders. She is the primary investigator of an fMRI study investigating the neural correlates of three common childhood anxiety disorders: separation anxiety disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and social phobia. Dr. Vasa completed her undergraduate training at Colby College and received her medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. She completed an internal medicine fellowship at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and her adult and child psychiatry training at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Vasa is board-certified and an active member of the Maryland Regional Council of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.

Workshop Continuing Education Credits

Three (3) continuing education credits will be offered for PA Social Workers & Licensed Professional Counselors, Psychologists, NBCC Counselors, and under Act 48.*

NBCC: Foundations Community Partnership (FCP) is an NBCC-Approved Continuing Education Provider (ACEP) and may offer NBCC-approved clock hours for events that meet NBCC requirements. The ACEP solely is responsible for all aspects of the program.
Psychologists: Foundations Community Partnership is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education to psychologists. FCP maintains responsibility for this program and content.
PA Social Workers: PA State Board accepts APA and NBCC approval for SW, MFT, and LPC.
Educators: Application has been approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education for three Act 48 Continuing Education Credits.
