The How and Why of Building EA and HR Relationships

Description:

The Human Resource (HR) function is different in every organization, but most will encompass employer "people" policies, procedures, benefits, talent management, labor relations (when there is a CBA), HR metrics, and communications. HR will often include payroll, EEO, law, safety/security, community relations, training, occupational health, wellness, ethics hotlines, OSHA / DOT / DOD compliance, and more. Why these HR functions exist and where / how Employee Assistance (EA) can and should interact with these functions will be the focus of this presentation on practical applications in building EA / HR relationships.

Goals:

  1. To explain a range of HR functions where EA/HR can and should interact on an operations level.
  2. To position EA for establishing value and utility beyond traditional EA roles.
  3. To encourage EA providers to expand on the Core Tech consultation role with the employer as the targeted client.
  4. To equip EA professionals with questions, comments, and tools to engage HR in a role expansion view of EA.

Objectives:

  1. To assess and compare the roles of HR and EA within an employer organization and within the employment relationship.
  2. To demonstrate EA availability and utilization as a broad extension of the way an employer relates to employees.
  3. To identify the practical applications of EA Core Tech to daily HR operations.
  4. To demonstrate proactive positioning of EA within an employer organization beyond traditional assessment / referral / short-term counseling roles.

Brief Bio:

Greg DeLapp is currently the Chief Executive Officer of EAPA, the global professional membership association for those working in or in support of Employee Assistance. He had previously served 10+ years on the EAPA Board of Directors in numerous roles, including Board President 1998-2000. A co-founder of the EAPA Philadelphia Chapter, having held a CEAP since 1987, Greg has lectured and provided training for EA and HR groups across the US, Europe, and Asia. From 1981 2015, Greg managed Employee Assistance and various HR functions across the $2.2B global specialty steel and engineered materials manufacturer Carpenter Technology Corporation (NYSE:CRS / www.cartech.com), Reading, PA. Active on many community boards in Pennsylvania, and with disability inclusion, and addictions related services; he is also a longstanding member of SHRM.

Greg works in Virginia, but lives in Pennsylvania, is married (Carol - 42 yrs), sons Paul, Patrick (Vanna), with keen interests in history, photography, WWII aviation, and travel (44 US states so far!). And – born in Mercy Hospital, Sacramento, CA !!

Participants will arrive to the course on time and will remain for the entire presentation. Participants will come prepared to learn and participate openly in discussion

No prior reading is required. Please bring a notebook and a pen.

Evaluation:

Participants will be required to sign out of the course and hand in their evaluation of the course before being given a CEU certificate. Any participant with disabilities or other special needs, who need special accommodations in this course are invited to share these concerns or requests with the instructor as soon as possible.

 

 

The San Francisco Chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association is approved by the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists to sponsor continuing education for LMFTs, LCSWs, and LPCCs and/or LEPs. The San Francisco Chapter of the Employee Assistance Professionals Association maintains responsibility for this program/course and its content. The Course meets the qualifications for 1.5 hours of continuing education credit for LMFTs, LCSWs, LPCCs, and/or LEPs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences.
