“Addressing the Needs of High-Risk Mothers and Infants: 
Effectiveness of the ABC Intervention”

In this roundtable, Dr. Bernard will discuss research showing that early adversity (e.g., exposure to poverty, maltreatment) has damaging effects on children’s development. She will present outcome data from a randomized clinical trial of the Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) intervention, a parent-coaching program that is designed to enhance the parent-child relationship among high-risk families. In addition to describing her research findings, Dr. Bernard will discuss the ABC intervention from a clinical perspective, showing videos that demonstrate the key components of the ABC model. 

 
Kristin Bernard, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in Psychology at Stony Brook University. As the director of the Developmental Stress and Prevention Lab, she is interested in how early life stress influences children’s neurobiological and behavioral development and how optimal caregiving and preventative interventions may buffer at-risk children from problematic outcomes.
