Providing a Sensory "In-Sync" Classroom
Saturday September 14, 2019
9:30-11:30 AM
Purcellville Children's Academy

Children who have sensory integration challenges often experience “overload” throughout their day and have difficulty participating in group activities, transitioning, and making friends. Providing a variety of sensory opportunities throughout the day can help all children stay “in sync” and be more successful in their ability to focus, attend, and socialize with peers.

Executive Functioning Challenges and Associated Behaviors
Saturday October 12, 2019
9:30-11:30 AM
Purcellville Children's Academy

Teachers and parents are reporting challenges with short attention, thinking flexibly, self-regulation of emotions, and impulse control all linking to inappropriate behavior, both at home and school. These difficulties are all part of Executive Functioning. The ability to recognize and regulate ones emotions, attention, impulses and behavior is a learned skill that begins early. Children who have difficulty with self-regulation continue to struggle throughout life. This workshop will explain EF skills, and provide evidence-based strategies and activities to strengthen these skills to improve focus and behavior.

Setting Up Your Environment for Successful Learning and Positive Behavior Outcomes
Saturday November 9, 2019
9:30-11:30 AM
Purcellville Children's Academy

The physical environment is the starting point for learning opportunities and affects children’ behavior. When arranged effectively, it can enhance learning and provide endless opportunities for children to develop self-regulation, independence and self-confidence. Learn how to set up and maintain your classroom, establish daily routines, rules and set limits, so all children experience a sense of belonging and feel safe to explore and take risks in the learning process. Establish interest areas that are engaging with age appropriate reading and writing materials providing language and literacy opportunities. Learn new ways to establish a classroom community that will enable children to form positive relationships with others and learn problem-solving skills in order to resolve conflicts peacefully.

Short Attention Spans
Saturday December 14, 2019
9:30-11:30 AM
Purcellville Children's Academy

Engaging children with short attention spans can be a challenge. Understanding their brains and other characteristics of these children can be key in helping teachers develop sensory specific strategies to help these children become successful engaged learners and be a positive influence in the classroom.
