This informative and fun workshop will give you some history and how the shakeré is used in folkloric traditions especially in Afro-Cuban and Latin music.
The shekeré, a musical instrument that is fun and exciting to play, is a natural gourd instrument covered with strings, rope and beads to make a basket which strikes the calabash.
Bill Mitkoff builds shekeré in the Boston area for some top players passing through the area.We will learn some beginning easy grooves and rhythmic patterns of afro-cuban and latin music.
While there will be some speaking and learning, there will also be a focus on how to actually play the instrument.
"My personal goal is to elevate the instrument’s status to incorporate art work and teach students how much fun it is and how easy it is to learn, make and play such a wonderful instrument."
