Educator Session:  It's Complicated:  Students, Social Media, and Mental Health
Social networking, cell phones, and video games are game changers for students today.  While a lot of social tech use happens outside of the classrrom, its impact shapes our students social and academic lives in ways that we can't ignore.

In this interactive and energizing presentation, Erin Walsh will use brain science, stories, and humor to explain how technology impacts mental health and academic performance.  Erin will help educators understand emerging evidence about the relationship between screen time and mental health and provide practical tools and strategies for addressing these challenges in schools and with families.

Erin will explore a range of questions including:

  • How can schools play a part in helping students become good digital citizens?
  • What is the relationship between social media use and anxiety and depression?
  • Is video and internet addiction real?
  • How does media use impact core learning skills like focus, attention and memory?
  • How can educators help identify red flags in social media use?
  • How can educators help students practice healthy media habits?
