Community Outreach Program presents Rick Lavoie in St. Louis for 2 seminars!
October 7, 2015

Speaker, author, and consultant, Rick Lavoie, will be in St. Louis on October 7th at Churchill Center & School.  Rick's intensive experiences at residential schools provided him with a "living laboratory" in which he developed and refined his methods and philosophies related to the education of children and adolescents with special needs.  Most parents and professionals know Rick through his video "How Difficult Can This Be?  The F.A.T. City Workshop".

Educator Session:  "That's Africa, Baby!!!:  An Affectionate Look at Special Education"
1:00 - 3:30 at Churchill Center & School

In this workshop, the presenter will explore the day to day realities and myths inherent in the education of students with Learning Disabilities. Drawing on thirty years of consulting and administrative experience, the speaker will present insights into frustrations felt by all educational professionals and will provide guidelines and advice for maintaining a healthy and productive perspective on the daily hassles and obstacles of life in the classroom.

As professionals, it is important that we act as advocates and agents of change in our schools but we must always be willing to recognize and acknowledge that some things cannot be changed and we must reserve our energies and resources for the battles that can be won.

Cost:  $75.00
We do accept P.O., call Mary Brotherton at 314-997-4343 to purchase seats with a P.O.

Parent Session:  Strategies That Don't Work with Struggling Kids . . . and Some That Do

7 - 8:30 PM at Churchill Center & School

A wise man once described "irrationality" as repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a difference result each time. In our field, there are numerous techniques that are frequently and extensively used despite the fact that these strategies are ineffective (e.g., follow-along reading, time out, classroom competition, punishment). This workshop will demonstrate these strategies and explore the reasons why they simply do not work.

As caregivers, we must consistently evaluate the strategies that we use with our students. As FDR cautioned us, "Do something. If it works, do more of it. If it doesn't work, do something else."

Cost:  $20.00  (Current Churchill Parent $15.00)
