Webinar description:
Millions of students are suspended from school each year. Research shows that when students are removed from the classroom for disciplinary reasons, they are at increased risk of repeating a grade, dropping out of school, and coming into contact with the juvenile justice system. This session will review a groundbreaking report that the Council of State Governments issued in June 2014 providing bipartisan field-driven recommendations to engage all students in safe, productive learning environments; effectively respond to their behavioral health needs; and limit the use of suspensions, expulsions, and referrals to the juvenile justice system for minor school-based offenses. Justice Center staff will provide an overview of the recommendations in the Consensus Report, highlight promising approaches from around the country, and discuss ways in which local jurisdictions and practitioners can move forward with changing policies and practices. A presentation will be followed by an interactive discussion.
