What You Should Know About Breast Cancer and IORT Treatment

Join UCLA radiation oncologist, Jeffrey Demanes, MD, and UCLA breast surgeon Raquel Prati, MD, as they discuss Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT), a new and exciting treatment option for patients with breast cancer. IORT is given as treatment in patients when the cancer is detected early and it can be used as a supplement to external beam radiation in patients with more extensive disease. In selected patients, this novel technique allows surgery and radiation to be done in one session.

About Jeffrey Demanes, MD

He is a past-president and current chairman of the American College of Radiation Oncology (ACRO). Dr. Demanes pioneered the use of high-dose-rate brachytherapy in breast, prostate, head and neck, GI and gynecologic cancers. His research explores the novel use of brachytherapy in the treatment of cancer.
